Inspiration & Legacy

Ever since I was a child I have been going to the Mela with my Late father Ram Awtar Sharma (M.D. Baidyanath Ayurved). My grandmother Smt. Bhuri Devi Joshi, popularly known as Maji, wife of Late Shri. R.D. Joshi (founder of Baidyanath Ayurved 1917), use to do Kalpvas for the full period of the Mela every year. For her stay, a set up of tents were pitched for her, and her guests, which was called the Camp. Family members, and visitors from our native village Kansli in Rajasthan would come to stay with Maji, at the camps in Prayagraj. During the Mela  my father would have lunch with Maji at the Camp everyday, before proceeding to his office, my brothers and me would usually accompany him. I would eagerly await for the Mela to return the next year, so we could continue our ritual.  After Maji passed away at the age of 100, the setup of the Camps became infrequent, Ardh Kumbh and Kumbh were the exceptions.

Charity

Charity has been a major part of our families motto during the Mela, Each member engaged in their own way.

Maji –  Collected white chaddars (sheets), blankets, and white dhotis throughout the year with the purpose of distributing them in the Mela. Every year she kept many Bhandaras at the various Akharas and Mutts. One such place which she adopted was the famous Phalahari Baba ka mandir, which is situated directly on the banks of the Sangam in the Arail side. She helped immensely in the running of the temple till it established itself into a self sufficient Ashram.

Ram Awtar Sharma – He was the hand behind Majis charitable endeavours, and continued all her works just the way she would have liked it. He ran exhibition every year on the Mela ground, which was mostly an awareness campaign for villagers to avoid diseases so that they can live a healthier life. Free medical check up camps in Prayagraj and distribution of Baidyanath medicines was done every year for the Kalpvasis.

Manju Sharma – my mother who was the National President of NCWI, and President of Trees for life. She adopted a unique system of having  the Shankrachary Ji distribute tree saplings as Prasad to the visitors, that ensured 100% survival rate for the trees. As Chapter Chairperson of Ekal Vidyalay Prayagraj, she is  active in promotion for  health & education specially to the girl child. In 2019 Kumbh Mela she had teamed with Swami Chidanand ji for, Sawach Bharat Abhiyan, Clean Ganga initiative, and many other social initiatives at the Mela.

Age Ayurveda

Is a brand that emerged as a concept from the book which I co-authoured, This book is an in depth study of the concepts laid down by Acharya Vagbhatta, in his text, my colleagues thesis has been to simplify the ancient knowledge. The book has two sections.

Section I –  illustrates  the evolvement of the concept of  “Age Ayurveda” , which identifies the natural loss of biological factors at different decades.

Section II – of this book explains the biology of aging according to the ancient ayurvedic texts, specifically the one explained by Acharya Vagbhatta (700A.D.). The emphasis is given to the aspects of natural aging as opposed to untimely aging, plus measures required to prevent it with the use of Rasayanas (Herbal Preparations). It also compares the various modern theories of aging in existence today.
